Timescope – Meta quest 3S

Timescope is a French company that has been creating virtual reality (VR) content for more than 10 years. Their goal is to help people understand the history of places, like monuments, old neighborhoods, or museums, by letting them see what those places looked like in the past through VR.

One area of focus of Timescope is to create VR group experiences for events, museums, and exhibitions. Its latest project is entitled ‘The Origins of Paris’ and was inaugurated in June 2025. This open-air historical journey guides participants along the banks of the Seine, where, at more than 15 key points along the route, they can put on the headsets provided and see the current view of Paris replaced by a 360° virtual reconstruction of the same location as it appeared at a specific moment in the past, covering more than 2,000 years of history. Unlike traditional VR setups conducted indoors, The Origins of Paris blends immersive technology with real-world surroundings. By placing the audience exactly where the historical events took place, the experience offers an innovative and engaging way to explore the city’s past.

The challenge

Timescope needed a lightweight, user-friendly VR headset that could be worn and removed repeatedly during an outdoor walking tour, while also integrating smoothly with their software system.

Usage

VR Expert enabled Timescope to successfully launch its outdoor VR tour by supplying the adapted Meta Quest 3S headsets and supporting the integration into their custom software system.

What they said

“The quality of the relationship, which is a long-standing partnership that has lasted for several years, was reaffirmed through this new project. Once again, we saw the relevance of the hardware recommendations, the value of the guidance provided, and the quality of the support during the integration process, especially the responsiveness to our technical questions, including the coordination with Meta.”

  • The Challenge

For the development of their VR experience The Origins of Paris, Timescope faced the challenge of finding a virtual reality headset suitable for outdoor use in a walking tour format. The headset needed to be comfortable and lightweight enough to be worn and removed repeatedly, up to 16 times, throughout the duration of the one-hour guided route along the Seine. Since the activity is designed for the general public, many of whom may have little to no prior experience with VR, the equipment also had to be intuitive and simple to operate.

In addition to ease of use and portability, the solution needed to be compatible with Timescope’s software ecosystem. This includes a system that manages the charging of multiple headsets, synchronizes the playback of VR content across the group, and allows for centralized control of the guided tour. The goal was to ensure a smooth and coordinated experience across all devices without requiring complex setup or technical assistance from participants.

    The solution

To meet these needs, Timescope has joined forces with VR Expert as part of their long-standing partnership. This collaboration builds on an already well-established relationship. Timescope values the expert advice and pragmatic approach, as well as the technical support and responsive service provided by the VR Expert team, particularly during periods of change or technical challenges. For its new outdoor VR experience, ‘The Origins of Paris,’ launched in June 2025, Timescope relied on VR Expert to provide the necessary VR headsets in time for the public launch.

For this project, The choice was made for the Meta Quest 3S headset. The decision was based on several practical criteria. The headset needed to be lightweight and comfortable enough to wear around the neck during a walking tour. To adapt the device to the format of the experience, Timescope removed the head strap and controllers, transforming the headset into a sort of VR binoculars. The Meta Quest 3S high-quality image rendering and balanced front-weighted battery design made it ideal for frequent use throughout the one-hour tour. The modified setup allowed users to easily lift the headset to their eyes at each stop, view the historical scene, then remove it again without discomfort.

In addition to supplying the hardware, VR Expert supported Timescope with several technical challenges. When Timescope decided to update its headset fleet, VR Expert provided loan devices to ensure continuity during the transition. The team also acted as an intermediary between Timescope and Meta, helping to navigate the complex process of integrating the headsets into Timescope’s custom software system while being hosted on Meta’s platform. Thanks to VR Expert’s involvement, key technical barriers were addressed efficiently, allowing Timescope to focus on delivering a smooth and coordinated public VR tour.
